Hampton Cycles http://hamptoncycles.posterous.com Authorized Specialized dealer 353 Hampton St Hampton Vic Australia. www.hamptoncycles.com.au (03) 9521-8700 posterous.com Tue, 31 Jan 2012 20:09:00 -0800 Specialized S-Works McLaren Venge http://hamptoncycles.posterous.com/specialized-s-works-mclaren-venge http://hamptoncycles.posterous.com/specialized-s-works-mclaren-venge

Every once in a while a bike comes along that just cant be explained with words. Specialized along with McLaren collaborated to put together such a bike.

This week we took deliver of 2 of them a 54cm & 56cm bike.

Dsc_3183
The 56cm Bike built up.

I had seen the press releases, the pictures on cyclingnews, managed to see one over at Specialized HQ, Morgan Hill in California late last year. Until holding it in my hands, closely inspecting the workmanship and details that have gone into producing such a special bike, I was not sure if it would live up to its hype.

Unboxing it last week, I have to say it sure does. Built up out of the box a 56cm bike weighs in at 6.3kg. Thats with Zipp Vuka bars, Zipp Speed stem, Zipp 404 Firecrest Tubulars. Shimano Di2 Groupset, S-Works Carbon Cranks, S-Works Carbon Toupe saddle and the amazingly light and strong EE Cycleworks brakes.

Dsc_3184

EE Cycleworks brakes 94gms the pair.

Dsc_3187
The paint finish on this bike is amazing! Vibrant red pinstriping would have taken quite some time to get it just right.

The normal S-Works Venge frame takes about 15-20 hours to make in labour. The McLaren frame takes upto 10 times that at 150-160 hours in carbon layup and optimization as well as frame finish and painting.

Dsc_3188
My only dissappointment with the bike is the archaic way that the Di2 battery has to be mounted. The cable tie is only there for transporting but at $18000 AUD I would have liked it to be a little more exotic. We will be putting the battery inside the seatpost for the customer lucky enough to buy our specimens.

Dsc_3193
We have for sale a 54cm and a 56cm complete bike. They are priced at $18000 and we will be including an internal Di2 battery with the bike at no extra cost. Come in and have a look at it in person or call/email if interested in the bikes.

Dsc_0883
Damo @ DeLuca discussing Tactics - DeLuca I am going to attack all day, Damo Uh Oh!

After rolling up to Sandown on Tuesday night for my first A grade race it was time to back it up with a Sunday morning crit at Glenvale.  Shop owner Damian Jones and Craig Porter made up the Hampton Cycles contingent ably assisted by Leigh 'I'm not ready yet' Schilling who spent the morning behind the camera lens and filling his two young daughters with Coke (hopefully his wife reads this blog!)

Dsc_1355
Proof of the Coke intake

The sun was out, the conditions were great and when I rolled up and received $45 prize money from last year's B grade effort the day couldn't have started any better.  How quickly things can change....

Dsc_0881
Quality Field just here

Standard pre race routine saw Ports and I warm up with a ride down to Glenvale where we hooked up with Damo just before the race. As soon as things got underway it was obvious that this was going to be a much harder race than my first A grade one 5 nights earlier.  An early break leapt away and the chase was on with the rest of the field being worked over in an attempt to bring things back.  This was where things started to go to custard.  After moving forward to be near the front of the chase group I found myself sitting second wheel and next thing I'm looking around to see a gap opened up behind and we are half way across which seemed like a good idea at the time but not for long.

Dsc_0922

Muzza realising his mistake about here

Next thing it's my turn on the front and feeling obligated after following the wheel for a while I gave it everything in an attempt to get across what was left of the gap.  This wasn't B grade which I soon realised as I made little impact on the gap and had no choice but to retreat to what would hopefully be the safety of the bunch.  Wrong again - with lungs burning I slotted back in and battled away for another 5 or so laps but the effort had cooked me and it was game over.

Dsc_0936
Ports copping a spray from DeLuca for dropping the wheel - Who needs friends?

From the comfort of the side of the road I watched Damo turn himself inside out in a break of 10 that worked hard in an attempt to stay away and Ports working overtime to maintain good position in what was a strung out bunch in pursuit.

Dsc_0898
Damo starting to suffer

Some big efforts from the chasers saw them reeled in only to see another break go clear which would prove to be the winning one.  The bunch tried hard to pull them back and a big turn on the last lap from Ports was only enough to bring the bunch to within 50 metres at the find bend but it wasn't enough and the break held on with 2006 Commonwealth Games Points Race Gold Medallist Sean Finning taking the chocolates.

Dsc_1382
Ports giving it a last ditch effort to chase down the break

If there was any consolation the CV of the winner highlights the quality of the field and it's not a bad effort for a few old dads to be going around in what is some of the most competitive crit racing around.  Looking forward to keeping my nose out of the wind in the next outing.

I have only had my Venge for a few days but it has to be the best bike I have ever ridden, stiff, fast, razor sharp handling and it cheats the wind like nothing before it. I tried not to believe the hype and make up my own decision. Everything I have read and heard about it seems true. If you want one of the black as black stealth Project Black models you better get in quick.

Expecting other sizes in about 4-5 weeks. Contact us to secure your ride! Or you will be sorry.

Tue, 26 Jul 2011 19:43:00 -0700 Hampton Cycles Shop Grand Re-Opening/TDF Night Pics and words http://hamptoncycles.posterous.com/hampton-cycles-shop-grand-re-openingtdf-night http://hamptoncycles.posterous.com/hampton-cycles-shop-grand-re-openingtdf-night

After what seemed like it would take forever but in reality only took 4 weeks, the renovations in the shop are complete, a few small variations and things still to happen, but we are set to go!

A great night was had by all with the unveiling of the new store design, comments ranging from - Wow, to I can't believe this is the same place, it looks so much bigger. There wasn't a bad word to be said. Who could blame them the Retail services team at Specialized Australia did an absolutely fantastic job of concept & design. The store layout is fantastic maximising our limited space and diverse clientele mix of family & kids bikes all the way through to S-Works central. Almost every product category gets a share of space.

20110722-dsc_9005

S-Works Frame selection wall, every size & or colour gets a hands on area, so it makes it easier for you to examine that custom build you have been dreaming of

20110722-dsc_9010

The fun kids bike wall, a way to check out the colours and sizes without having to drag out a few bikes to see what will be suitable for that special child in your life.

20110722-dsc_9014

A Body Geometry Saddle wall, where we can help choose a saddle based on your Sit bone measurements.

Different Widths for Different Riders:

No two pairs of sit bones are the same. Skinnier saddles don't necessarily work best for smaller riders, wider Saddles for larger riders, and so on. Even the difference in sit bone width when riding in an upright or aero position is significant. There's simply no accurate way to pick the best sized saddle for someone's body-meaning the one that will keep you riding longer in more comfort-besides accurately measuring the distance between a rider's sit bones (ischial tuberosities) and its relation to their positioning.

Specialized's Body Geometry Saddle Fit System measure actual sit bone width, then you the rider with the help from the Hampton Cycles team can determine which width saddle and style  to choose (all the model's we stock have multiple sizes available). No more blind choices. No more dealing with uncomfortable, poor fitting saddles. Different riders have different width sit bones. Body Geometry multi-width saddles optimize performance, fit and comfort.

We also have a Test Saddle program whereby you can test the Specialized saddles for a few days with no obligations to ensure that the saddle you buy is something that you will like.

Damien, Tim & myself (Leigh) would like to thank all our customers for being understanding during the renovation process. It was hard for you too having to deal with some longer than normal waiting and reduced mechanic capacity.

The night was a blast from our side of things, fun seemed to be had by all. The goodie bags, the mystery door prizes and to top it off an epic stage of the Tour De France made for a fun evening. Finding empty bottles around the shop on Saturday wasn't as much fun though. Nice hiding guys!

Thanks to all the Staff at Specialized Australia for helping the entire process- Hannah, Dave V, Courtney, Matt & Laura, Gabe, Con, Aaron, Leesa, Dave C, Brian, Patty, Adam, Jamie . The speeches and goodie bags were amazing!!!

Thanks to Echelon Sports & Leigh DeLuca for contributing to the night with some great giveaways and info on Zipp Wheels.

Thanks to Monza Imports - Hayden & Dan for your contributions and Sram prize giveaways.

Thanks to Brett & John @Capo for the Capo gear.

Thanks to Phil @ Oakley for the Sunglasses.

Thanks to all our VIP customers that could make it along to the evening, letting us know how much you love the new shop was great to hear from our end. Without you all there would be no Hampton Cycles.

Feel free to drop in & check out the place, don't forget to say hi.

Leigh

Tue, 12 Jul 2011 12:00:00 -0700 2012 Specialized Dealer Launch http://hamptoncycles.posterous.com/2012-specialized-dealer-launch-65993 http://hamptoncycles.posterous.com/2012-specialized-dealer-launch-65993

Whilst Damo is over in sunny Monterey, California just near the famous Pebble Beach Golf Course. Testing out the latest and Greatest from the Big "S", I have been doing my net searching to see if I could find some pics of what he was talking about. Sometimes the iPhone just doesnt cut it for quality imagery.

The US Specialized site has a few bikes that will be avilable early release over there. Some are the same as this years models, others have had a bit of a change.

Here are a couple of highlight bikes for me and the changes from 2011.

9333

The all new Girls Myka, Womens specific geometry and instantly distinguishable from the HardRock.

9626

The Crux Expert, Hope this bad boy makes its way over here. Perfect for the Dirty Deeds Cyclocross series if you want to look and be a little more serious than slapping some knobbies and some V Brakes on your old roadie.

9040

The New Carve Pro 29 is a competition-inspired aluminum hardtail 29er with an 80mm-travel RockShox Recon Gold 29 SL fork, Shimano Deore hydraulic disc brakes, and Shimano SLX shift levers.

9499
S-Works Shiv TT Module - We already have these instore

Stiff, light, and incredibly aerodynamic, the Shiv TT has won World Championships in both Time Trial and Ironman Triathlon: It's the perfect choice for any race against that clock, and is completely UCI- and triathlon-legal.

9570

And what Beach Rd loving weekend warrior, cafe racer or crit legend wouldn't have their eye on the "free speed" machine.

Everyone has seen the S-Works Venge rolling around, in store or on the web, what most haven't seen is the Venge Pro, which will be a slightly heavier, cheaper lower specced version of the S-Works version just like their Tarmac & Roubaix Pro bikes.

Here is a link to Canadian Cycling Magazines quick overview of the Pro version

Will update with some more 2012 info when it comes to hand
